Artist Statement
I paint because I have to; I paint because I can. It is who I am.
My paintings are generally extreme close-up views or unusual presentations of universally recognizable subjects rendered to appear as photo- realism. The presentation turns what could have become a routine still life into an almost surreal landscape. I use vibrant color in unexpected ways giving the viewer just a glimpse of the way I perceive the world and express my reaction to my subject.
I paint a wide variety of subject matter with each new piece being a complete departure from the last. I feel the need to explore every idea as it comes and not be bound to repeat myself.
Creating a great sense of depth is an important part of all of my work. I want the viewer to feel as though he is being pulled directly into each piece so as to experience the subject as he never has before. I work predominantly in watercolor using no white paint. The white of the paper forms the basis for all white and light values creating a painting that seems to glow from within. It is a unique beauty which I find captivating.
